Competitive Research - Pandora Radio


Pandora is free, personalized radio that plays music that user will love. Just start with the name of one of the user's favorite artists, songs, or composers and Pandora will create a custom station that plays similar tracks.

Since i am not allowed to access to this website, i decide to study how Pandora Radio works at howstuffworks.com.

How Pandora Radio works?

When it comes to finding new music for one's library, one can spend hours combing websites for new artists and listening to clips.

With the advent of Web-based "music-discovery services," though, the art of finding new music has changed. Internet radio sites like TagWorld, Last.fm and Pandora allow users to type in a song or artist they like and instantly find other music that might fit their taste.


The difference Pandora and the other two internet radio site is the Music Genome Project. Pandora has no concept of genre, user connections or ratings. Pandora relies on a Music Genome that consists of 400 musical attributes covering the qualities of melody, harmony, rhythm, form, composition and lyrics. It's a project that began in January 2000 and took 30 experts in music theory five years to complete. The Genome is based on an intricate analysis by actual humans of the music of 10,000 artists from the past 100 years. The analysis of new music continues every day since Pandora's online launch in August 2005. As of May 2006, the Genome's music library contains 400,000 analyzed songs from 20,000 contemporary artists.


Pandora.com is an interface while the Music Genome Project is the database. All user do to get started is type a song or artist into the main field of the player. If user type in, say, "Ben Folds" and click the "create" button, user has created a radio station called "Ben Folds Radio" that will only play songs with similar musical traits to Ben Folds' songs.


Pandora automatically displays the Music Genome traits for the first couple of songs our new radio station plays. After that, user can find out exactly why Pandora is playing any song by clicking on the album art and choosing "Why did you play this song?" from the menu. After "Amsterdam," Pandora plays Ben Jelen's "Give It All Away."


"Based on what you've told us so far." It's not just talking about the fact that user likes Ben Folds. Pandora wants user to give it feedback so it can refine the station based on user's likes and dislikes. User can give any song the station plays either a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down, and providing this feedback instantly changes the station's playlist. Let's say user don't care for "Give It All Away." To give it a thumbs-down, user left-click on the album art and chose the thumbs-down, "I don't like it" option.


Now Pandora will never play "Give It All Away" on our Ben Folds Radio station again, and it will play songs that are genetically similar to "Give It All Away" less often. If user clicks on the arrow next to the Ben Folds Radio station and choose "Edit this station," user can see that Pandora has put "Give It All Away" on the list of songs user did't like.


Giving a thumbs-up has the opposite effect, that song and other songs like it will play more often. The idea is to continually provide feedback so the station learns more and more about what user like and don't like. The result is a progressively personalized radio station that really does play only music user wants to hear. It takes a while to get there, but most people agree that the feedback process works.

Assembling the Pandora Playlist

So here's what happened behind the scenes when user created his/her Ben Folds Radio station: Pandora located a song by Ben Folds and pulled up the Genome analysis for that song. It then ran an algorithm that compared every song in the Genome database to the genetic makeup of that song in order to identify songs that have similar traits. The algorithm looks for matches across 400 parameters.

Here's just a handful of the traits and concepts it looks at
(definitions excerpted from the Virginia Tech Multimedia Music Dictionary):
• arrangement - the selection and adaptation of a composition or parts of a composition to instruments for which it was not originally designed
• beat - the regular pulse of music
• form - the structure of a composition, the frame upon which it is constructed; based upon repetition, contrast, and variation
• harmony - the concordant (or consonant) combination of notes sounded simultaneously to produce chords
• lyrics - the words of a song
• melody - a succession of tones comprised of mode, rhythm, and pitches so arranged as to achieve musical shape
• orchestration - the art of arranging a composition for performance by an instrumental ensemble
• rhythm - the subdivision of a space of time into a defined, repeated pattern
• syncopation - deliberate upsetting of the meter or pulse of a composition by means of a temporary shifting of the accent to a weak beat or an off-beat
• tempo - the speed of the rhythm of a composition
• vamping - to extemporize the accompaniment to a solo voice or instrument
• voice - the production of sound from the vocal chords, often used in music; falls into six basic categories defined by pitch, ranging, from bottom to top, Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Contralto, Mezzo Soprano, and Soprano

Pandora Concerns

There are, of course, concerns about the Music Genome Project from some in the music world. First, since the Genome is proprietary, there's no possibility for independent review. For all we know, Pandora Media's "experts" don't know the difference between syncopation and vamping. Also, in a much broader way, the Music Genome Project assumes that music's traits can be objectively analyzed at all, that the mind of the listener can be left out of the equation. Some experts doubt that music can be quantified in this way.

Regarding the player itself, an issue arises when user creates a station using an artist as a seed. Some artists have such a varied collection of styles that there are endless ways the Genome algorithm can go when determining matches. In such a case, Pandora may return music user doesn't like at all. For this reason, it's often wise to use a song instead of an artist as a seed.

Critical Judgement:
The mechanism of this website works similarly to my idea except for the feedback feature and process. Pandora Radio ran an algorithm that compared every song in the Genome database to identify songs that have similar music traits. As for my project, the recommendation will be generated based on the user's personality trait according to Carl Jung's theory.

4. New Collections feature enables targeted browsing by genre


Premiere's new Collections feature highlights the best that television and the web have to offer—all grouped into fresh, fun, up-to-date categories. Odds are, viewer will discover multiple collections ideally suited to viewer's interests. Explore topical collections, event-driven collections, seasonal collections and groups of shows related to something new, interesting or popular. Viewer can even “favorite” a collection and let TiVo know what's hitting viewer's sweet spot.

5. Search collates matches from both broadcast TV and the web


Premiere's Search feature is faster and more intuitive than ever, sorting through hundreds of channels and network names (like NBC or ESPN) and thousands of broadband options from sources like Netflix, YouTube™, Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus. Results are sorted and displayed by most popular matches first, so viewer is likely to find a match in seconds after entering just one letter. Even cooler, viewer will see all the ways viewer can get his/her movie or TV show, including the corresponding price from each source. The end result is viewer find what he/she want to watch easily, quickly, and for the lowest price available.

6. Creating a WishList search

Viewer knows what he/she likes, but not sure if or when it’s on? Create a WishList search. Viewer can search on actor, keyword, or category. Better yet, viewer can tell the search what sorts of results to include. Select the “Auto-Record” option, and every time a show matching viewer's criteria airs, it will be recorded.

7. Rating shows

TiVo Suggestions uses viewer's Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down ratings to find and record shows viewer might like. The more shows viewer rates over time, the better TiVo suggestions will get at recommending interesting TV and movies for viewer.

Do You Trust Your Recommendations?

People often overwhelmed with the number of options available to them. to combat this information overload, many have turned to recommender systems: tools that use a user's opinions about in some information domain in order to recommend other items to that user. For example, Amazon.com uses a recommender system to make personalized recommendations suggesting product that a user might like based on the products she has purchased, expressed an opinion about, or viewed. (Frankowski et al., 2006)

Recommender systems are widely used to help deal with the problem of information overload. However, recommenders raise serious privacy and security issues. The personal information collected by recommenders raises the risk of unwanted exposure of that information. (Frankowski et al., 2006)

While many individuals appreciate personalization and find it useful, personalization also raises a number of privacy concerns ranging from user discomfort with a computer inferring information about them as they provide personal data to website in order to receive a personalized service. (Cranor, 2004)

TiVo watchers uneasy after post-Super Bowl reports

Janet Jackson's Super Bowl flash dance was shocking in more ways than one: Some TiVo users say the event brought home the realization that their beloved digital video recorders are watching them, too.
On Monday, TiVo said the exposure of Jackson's breast during her halftime performance was the most-watched moment to date on its device, which, when combined with the TiVo subscription service, lets viewers pause and "rewind" live television broadcasts, among other features.

TiVo said users had watched the skin-baring incident nearly three times more than any other moment during the Super Bowl broadcast, sparking headlines that dramatically publicized the power of the company's longstanding data-gathering practices.

TiVo Weakness:

'I Didn't Buy It For Myself'
Family members may have different preferences of movies and musics they like. TiVo® Premiere DVR which is connected to the TV at home may most probably not own by one person, it is possibly being shared among the family members. Therefore, the recommendation feature may not work on every members at home. This feature would only contribute best to the member that use the DVR most often.

Critical Judgement:
Since my target audience use their personal devices such as laptop, smartphone, or tablet. Therefore, the TiVo weakness isn't an issue for my design and the recommendation feature would just work fine. Besides, the way my recommendation feature works is different from TiVo. My recommendation is based on the analysis of the answers of users' personality traits according to Carl Jung's and Myers Briggs's theory thus the users are aware of the information they gave to me while TiVo track their viewer's behavior through their history in using the device would just their viewers feel uneasy to use it.

  • It’s Time to Take Video Seriously
Americans are watching increasing numbers of videos online. According to comScore, this number has jumped over 43% to 100 million daily views (that’s roughly one-third of the U.S. population watching a video online each day).


More Americans are watching a growing number of videos online.
Of the 43.5 billion videos viewed in December 2011, over half of those were on Google properties (21.9 billion), primarily YouTube.

With the advent of long-form video content online through vendors like Netflix and Hulu, there’s been an increase in how long users will watch a video from 5 minutes to nearly 6 minutes. This may open the door for marketers looking to produce edutainment videos (combining education and entertainment to produce engaging videos that keep people watching).

The way people watch videos is changing with the advent of mobile phones, notebooks and gaming systems. These differences are especially pronounced in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.


For example, Nielsen found that someone from the Asia/Pacific region is more than twice as likely to watch a video on a mobile device as a North American. However, a European is half as likely to watch on a mobile device as the average global consumer.

  • What type of device do people watch YouTube videos on?
In 2011, one of the most important drivers of online video views was mobile devices. As technology improves and newer smart phone models are being released into the market, prices have gone down on older versions, making it possible for more people to own one. The domino effect of this, of course, is that more people can go online on mobile devices and can read or watch content right on their phones to keep them entertained anywhere they are in the world. 

So far YouTube hasn’t managed to successfully monetize mobile video like they have on computers. YouTube is said to be working on that issue though as they too see the growing trend for mobile viewing and obviously want to be able to offer advertising wherever videos on their site are shown.

  • Tablets will replace the smartphone
YouTube content and the Olympic Games — is more readily accessible on mobile devices, screen size and video quality become more important. Why watch the content on a small, low-resolution screen when you can watch it on a high-definition screen that’s still easily portable? 

People want to have a not only mobile but also immersive experience. The user interface is moving beyond pocketable screens. Tablets can do the same things as smartphones, only better.

I would like to develop my interface design on computers screen size. Despite the growing trend for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, people still watch video on their computers. Besides, YouTube hasn't managed to successfully monetize mobile video like they have on computers. In addition, i have never owned a mobile device before so i am not familiar with its interface design. I am this more comfortable to design the user interface for computer screen size.

• AC: Its taken 10 weeks from inception to shape this concept.

• The IT companies who interest to make products for the hospitality services like restaurants, food kiosks and hotels or any IT (Software/Hardware) company who interests to look into the new product possibilities.

• AC: I made time-activity matrix and analyzed psychological & behavioral patterns.

What did AC learn?
• AC: I realized that user experience is not only about to design the good product keeping ergonomic, interaction design and the usability issues but also the psychological, financial and behavioral needs of the end-users.

Main principle, idea and inspiration behind the design
• To introduce the design which fulfills the basic need when we go out for good dining experience. The inspiration was his self experience and observation whenever he goes to restaurants and hotels.
"I am always fascinated with the high-tech interactive devices which enhance the social and entertainment experiences. Which are slowly but merging the difference of man-made and god-made. They are taking place fast around and fulfills the small to big needs of our daily life. When I say it I found that not much is happening in the restaurants/hotels dining/hospitality services in terms of solving the basic needs." said AC.

Unique aspect of the design
• Dining, social, entertainment and the information need at one platform. Like - know food details, decide your own recipe, know historical information of dishes, interact with cook, chef and waiter, know the serving time, enjoy the games, city news/movies, interact with other like-minded customer while you food is being served and swipe for payment yourself. All these activities has seamless performance. This design uniqueness also include that it is the complete combination of Interface and Industrial design. There were many challenges for Industrial design aspects as well. Like how much should be the size of the units which sits nicely in the limited table space, easily used by cook, easily held by waiter. How to operate easily in the situations like multiple users, with kid, while eating, turning the screen to other, hold the unit in hand etc.

How long did it take AS to design this particular concept?
• AS: I think it was growing for a few years and when the time came I drew it in an hour. Production, ergonomics and software adjustment took months.

What are AS's future plans for this award winning design?
• AS: I am going to develop Dominus for other platforms such as Android, Windows Phone, Pebbe and Mac.

Who is the target customer for this design
•  Everyone who is looking for something new and likes sci-fi stuff - are they people from the Future?

What kind of research did AC conduct for making this design?
• AS: The project is based on my own iTunes Store research with conclusion that there are more than 2000 clock apps and most of them are ugly or imitative and only a few are nice and original. Because we live in the 21st century I think that apps could become something different from typical "textual menu" programs, on the contrary, they should explore new forms of interfaces and interaction with people.

What did AS learn?
• AS: I went through the whole process - from idea, through concept drawing, programming production, tests and improvements, than - iStore submission, choosing the name and identification, and last but not least - constructing webpage, writing promotion texts for portals and magazines. That's how I discovered that design is only 10% of the product and you must really believe in it and be patient. It was an important lesson.

"My idea was to design something having a lot to do with ”digital matter”, with simple interface. My principle - make things as simple as possible. Of course I also wanted to do something beautiful for everyday use." said AS

• Most clock apps look like real clocks from the past (analogue clock, dixie, LCD matrix, flip) primarily designed for circle or square frame. Only a few apps try to adjust their design to ”digital matter” of applications and be proper for the mobile devices framework.

Unique aspect of the design
• The simple albeit not obvious comparison of AM and PM times to fruits. Green color corrensponds to time that is growing and yellow corresponds to the time that is already "mature".

What is the role of technology in this particular design?
• Technology made this project possible - especially touch screen technology - it opens new field which enables us to design interactive reaction of ”digital things”.

I couldn't get much details because there's no interview about this project unlike E-Steward project and Dominus Plus project. However i get to see how the presentation of design should be like because i found images of Tomo Branding & Interface Design by Young Joo Tak Jae Moung Yang at A' Design Award and Competition Photo Gallery.

Similar to the TOMO Branding projet, i couldn't get much details because there's no interview about this project unlike E-Steward project and Dominus Plus project.
